You cannot pay more life than you have. If you're on death's door, you won't be able to pay any life and Blood Mana won't help you.

What happens if the next spell I cast is Twist of Fate?

Let's say your life is 16 and my life is 20. Therefore, you cast Twist of Fate for 4 mana, but instead of mana, you pay 4 life. Your life is now 12 and the magic goes onto the Storyline. The magic resolves, swapping our life totals. My life is now 12 and your life is 20. Tricky!
