Lord of Greed may and must take a carriable artifact from anywhere in the realm, including from another unit sharing a location with him. In this case, 'elsewhere' means anywhere other than Lord of Greed's hands! He will take from allies as well. This does not target the artifact, so even artifacts carried by minions with stealth are not safe from Lord of Greed.
